Anonymous asked: I recently had a nervous breakdown not too unlike the one you chronicled in your book. I feel like, though I'm much better off than I was a couple months ago (after partial hospitalization and ongoing outpatient therapy), I feel like I've hit a wall in my recovery and this is it; this is as good as I'll get, and I'm still miserable. I don't feel like medication is an option because everything I've ever taken (and I've taken a LOT of different meds) has ended in disaster. What can I do?

It’s only been two months. If you think of your breakdown as being a period where you went to a babylike state and needed to be cared for, think of your recovery as a very accelerated growing up time. By that measure, I’d say you’re in toddler phase. In another couple months, you’ll be in elementary school phase, and so on and so forth. You’ve got awhile before you graduate college, so be very patient with yourself and loving with yourself. Reward yourself for doing things that seemed impossible a few months ago. I find it helps to do inner child work and to sometimes talk to yourself as if you’re a very loving parent helping to raise a kid. You’d be patient with a kid, right? Be patient with yourself. You are growing each and every day, even with setbacks.
